Three Signs You’re in Need of Siding Repair
Aside from your roof, your siding is one of the biggest parts of your home exterior in terms of area—and certainly the most noticeable! Many homeowners take pride in this part of their home’s cosmetic appeal, so when it gets damaged, it can be a thorn in your side until you get it fixed. We won’t even mention the moisture damage and the consequential mold infestation that can also develop!
Worried your siding may have seen better days? Haggerty Windows & Siding is here to help. Below, we’ll touch on three signs that your siding has been damaged and discuss how urgent calling a pro is in each case.
Wood Rot
If you’ve got wooden siding—and we’re talking 100% wooden, not the hardier engineered kind—your exterior is vulnerable to one kind of damage that other siding types aren’t: rot. There are many types of wood rot, as Bob Vila, a trusted home advice resource, discusses, but all are destructive, all can be hard to find, and all of them can be hard to get a handle on.
You’ll know you have wood rot if your siding gives under the gentle pressure of a pointed tool, or if it looks off-color and crumbly. You’ll need to replace these boards ASAP to prevent the fungus’s reach from extending, but since wood siding is so flimsy, we recommend just replacing it all. Engineered wood siding from LP Smartside is a durable and similar-looking alternative.
Fading
Fading, or UV damage, might be solely cosmetic, and indeed, it’s generally not a problem in and of itself if its appearance doesn’t bother you. That being said, it’s usually indicative that something more notable is afoot that will require siding repair, such as old age or the consequences of improper maintenance. At the very least, if your siding is looking a little lackluster, it’s a good idea to call a local siding company for an inspection to make sure nothing serious is going on.
Cracks
These tend to be hard to miss, though sometimes they can start small and grow imperceptibly over time. Cracked siding is an emergency, even more so if what’s beneath it is visible. Without it functioning at full-throttle, your home becomes vulnerable to moisture damage, which can lead to mold colonization. Gross!
